A Digital Cinema Package (DCP) is the industry-standard format used by digital projectors in cinemas. It’s not a single file — it’s a folder with media and metadata arranged so theaters can ingest and play your movie reliably.

What’s Inside a DCP?

Picture (MXF): JPEG2000-encoded frames in XYZ color space (2K or 4K).
Audio (MXF): 24-bit WAV at 48 kHz or 96 kHz (Stereo, 5.1, or 7.1).
Subtitles (optional): SMPTE XML timed text, or open (burn-in).
Metadata (XML): CPL composition playlist, PKL packing list, ASSETMAP, and VOLINDEX.

Do I Always Need a DCP?

Encryption prevents unauthorized playback. If you encrypt, you’ll need KDMs (Key Delivery Messages) generated for the specific cinema server certificate and a defined time window. Build in time for testing and key distribution.

How Do I Make a DCP?
